Photo From: Mark Freburg - Album: Handguns--Modern

Description: EAA imports the Italian made Tanfoglio Witness P.  This is a standard 1911 with only a few modern features like a railed dustcover, extended beavertail, and extended thumb safety.  The lightweight frame is made of polymer instead of aluminum or steel, but it is dimensionally identical to the aluminum or steel versions.  To cope with issue of rails when using polymer there are two steel inserts in the frame, a smaller one in the middle and a larger one toward the rear.  Besides the rails being let into these sections, all pins reside in these steel portions as well.  Based on exploded drawings there appear to be only these two extra parts beyond a standard 1911 in the Witness P.  This makes it less anything truly very different, simply a choice of polymer instead steel, aluminum, or scandium--the previous materials used for construction of 1911s.  And really, other than the highly visible dust cover, the overall appearance is almost retro.  The stocks are plain black plastic or rubber, the sights are very retro, even though high visibility, the entire thing is quite low key, not giving the appearance of being ground breaking at all.  One nod to practicality is a one piece ramped barrel, which is often considered a high end modification.  Should Tanfoglio or EAA wish to offer this in .38 Super or 10mm they already have the desired barrel design ready to go.  One of the best aspects of the Witness P is that its MSRP is under $600 and its street price is under $500.  Um...wow.
