Description: My Smith & Wesson 455 MARK II Hand Ejector Second Model, British Service with a selection of the ammunition that was produced for this revolver. At the back is a rare box of Dominion .455 Colt Cartridges. These were the Mk1 Cartridges, which had the longer case, which was used originally with Black Powder. The cartridges and components in front are from left to right: Dominion 265gr Mk1 cartridge Dominion Mk1 case Fiocchi new .455 brass (Mk11) Canadian milsurp MkII Bullets are 255gr lead HBRN The bullets were made hollow-based, to assist their expansion in the Webley MkVI revolver barrels, which were usually larger than the cylinder chambers. The .455 case was shortened when the round changed from BP to Smokeless propellant. Both cartridges can be safely fired in my revolver. The Dominion ammunition claims that the bullet will achieve 770fps, with a Muzzle Energy of 349ft/lbs. This cartridge has had many names: .455 Colt, .455 Webley, and .455 Colt-Eley. American revolvers manufactured for the British Commonwealth were marked either .455 (as my S&W is) or .455 Eley. Reloading for this revolver will be interesting; not just because the components are becoming difficult to find, but also to discover the accuracy potential of this legendary cartridge and equally legendary revolver.
