Gallager Carbine

Photo From: JimWolford - Album: Rifles--Modern Sporting

Description: Repro of the Gallager Carbine, a "capping breechloader" meaning it uses a sort of cartrige, but is fired with a percussion cap- other members of this type include the Sharps, and the Burnside, the Maynard, etc. The Union purchased 22,700 of these and two units were armed with them, they were universally hated by the troops as they would jam and leave one hiding behind something while digging frantically at the stuck cartrige with the pocket knife. It is a 54 caliber and fires a 300 grain bullet. The rear sight has a folding leaf for 300 yards, but when you fold it up it is over an inch tall. Probably has a trajectory about equal to a well driven golf ball. This repro was produced by Erma Werke in Germany, no longer in production but in demand by CW reenactors
