It seems to have faded in recent years in the lower 48 in favor of the .338 Win Mag (or the big bores)on one end and rounds like the .338 Federal on the other end. Down here the .358 seems like it would do the job on most anything, though.

The 358W was not a very popular cartridge in Alaska. It was the first gun the customer got as a youngster. He wanted to restock it but kept the 358W loading. Good deer gun in Alaska. I changed the bottom metal, added barrel band front sight, added barrel band swivel, plugged the two screw holes on the side of the rear bridge, plugged the rear action screw hole on the tang. I mounted quick detach scope mounts and made a peep sight that mounted to the rear scope base when the scope was removed. So the peep sight was quick detach like the scope. The bolt release was flared and checkered. The rear swivel was a two screw inletted into the stock. The wood was a plain sawed English Walnut blank that was given to me by a wood guy in California. I bought six stock blanks and he threw this one in for a bonus. It was a really nice piece of walnut.

In the photo you can see the rear tang doesn't have a hole in it. I wanted to contour the rear tang but the customer wanted to leave it stock.
