FAIRFAX, Va. -- The National Rifle Association applauded the land-slide election of Susan Phillips to be the new Representative for Missouri^s 32nd State House District. Phillips won by a wide margin despite a highly negative and misleading campaign run by the state Democratic Party -- at the behest of Governor Carnahan -- against her support of freedom and individual rights. "When gun owners and their families in the district started receiving those slick, high-dollar mailings attacking Susan, we knew that voters in the district would rise to the challenge," said Randy Kozuch, Director of State & Local Affairs for the National Rifle Association. "To us, it signaled desperation, and, frankly, we were a little bit surprised to see the state Democratic Party make such a strategic error. Not only did they run a negative campaign against a very positive candidate, but they attacked Susan for her support of a very mainstream issue, the Second Amendment. "In Missouri and throughout the country, NRA members and gun owners cherish their rights and always turn out to help elect candidates who share their values. If the Democratic Party^s negative campaign achieved anything, it further mobilized and energized support for Susan Phillips," continued Kozuch. "In today^s Kansas City Star, Susan herself attributed her victory to having, ^an army of volunteers,^ and I couldn^t agree more. "NRA^s endorsement brings to a campaign the most valuable asset it can have, the grassroots support of district voters who get involved and get their candidate elected. Attacking the NRA and the Second Amendment guarantees that these volunteers will be highly motivated in defense of their rights. That^s just what happened in Northland yesterday, and that^s what will happen throughout Missouri next year."
