The fourteenth annual Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) will take place on September 17, 18 & 19, 1999 at the Airport Renaissance Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. Missouri was originally chosen in the hopes of celebrating another major grassroots victory, but on April 6th, 1999, the state voters barely defeated a proposal to allow law-abiding people to carry concealed handguns. This unfortunate outcome provides even more reason to gather in Missouri so as to analyze the Proposition B campaign, learn lessons from it, and apply these experiences to battles all around the country in order to win the next time. "GRPC brings national gun rights leaders together with grassroots activists in order to set the pro-gun agenda for the upcoming year," stated Alan Gottlieb, Founder of SAF. "Concealed carry reform and reciprocity will be just one of the crucial topics at GRPC ’99." The speakers list for GRPC’ 99 will read like the who’s who of the nationally recognized gun rights leaders. Congressman Bob Barr (GA, R-7th) is confirmed as a speaker for Saturday evening^s reception as well as a Sunday morning speaker. Past speakers have included: nationally syndicated radio talk show hosts G. Gordon Liddy & Ken Hamblin, American Shooting Sports Council Executive Director Richard Feldman and Chairman Mike Saporito, longtime NRA Director Neal Knox, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne La Pierre; and noted scholars such as; David B. Kopel, Stephen Halbrook, Don Kates, plus dozens of others. SAF President and Gun Week Executive Editor Joseph P. Tartaro has dubbed the GRPC as, "The single most important event in the gun rights movement." His sentiments are echoed by many other gun rights leaders. "GRPC is a person’s best chance to meet many of the national gun-rights leaders in one place and ask them about their opinions and strategies for the future of the gun-rights movement," stated John Barnett, SAF Executive Director and conference coordinator. "These same top leaders will also be at the GRPC to listen to your personal ideas and goals." In addition to analyzing our future opportunities and current strategies, attendees will hear and participate in discussions of all areas of the gun rights debate, including how to counter anti-gun claims, become more involved in the pro-gun movement, and affect future legislation and elections. "Anyone who considers themselves a gun-rights’ activist cannot afford to miss the GRPC. The stakes are too high and many battles are beginning," stated Gottlieb. "Many past participants of GRPC return year after year to stay current on all the ongoing efforts to keep our precious right to keep and bear arms." "An important feature of the 1999 GRPC is the opportunity for SAF members to submit ideas and suggestions for conference agenda items to be discussed," said John Barnett GRPC Coordinator. Agenda item submissions must be postmarked by July 31, 1999. Any member whose submission is used at GRPC will receive a personally autographed copy of Alan Gottlieb’s latest book, Politically Correct Guns.
