Marksmen will compete for the highly coveted Governor^s Cup during competions at the 34th Annual Governor^s Invitational Firelock Match at Fort Frederick State Park on September 25 & 26. Park visitors can observe units portraying military life on Saturday and then watch the units in team drill and musket competitions on Sunday. The event brings together many reactivated units portraying the period between 1750-1800. Sponsored by the Friends of Fort Frederick, the event is one of the longest running 18th century firing competitions in the United States. The match is based on an 18th century military review. Similar events were common occurrences in both Europe and the American colonies and included drill competitions, camp and equipment inspections, and firing competitions. Visitors can purchase period wares from 18th century sutlers and watch living history programming on Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Competitive events take place from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday. The event is free to the public. Sign language interpreters and other accommodations for individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. The state park is home to Fort Frederick, which was built in 1756 by the colony of Maryland to defend its western frontier during the French and Indian War of the 1750s. The fort has been partially restored and is considered the best preserved, pre-Revolutionary War stone fort in North America. The park is located in Washington County, one mile east of I-70, off exit 12 (Route 56). For more information, contact the park office at (301) 842-2155.
