As we reported last week, Congress has adjourned for the year, and no new gun restrictions were passed. Two items benefitting gun owners did pass -- funding was appropriated for the operation of the National Instant Check System (NICS), ensuring that no "gun tax" will be charged to law-abiding gun purchasers for using the system, and Congress set aside approximately $7.25 million to extend "Project Exile" nationwide.
While this is far short of the $50 million NRA has been calling for, it is certainly a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, the language passed did not specify which jurisdictions would receive the funding, nor how "Project Exile" would be implemented.
Rest assured that NRA will be watching the Clinton-Gore-Reno Administration very closely to try to ensure that these federal funds are used appropriately.
