New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has released hunter safety figures for the 2000 seasons. With over 700,000 licenses issued in 2000, a total of 43 accidental shootings were documented of which only 4 were fatal. Eleven incidents occurred as a result of the victim^s failure to wear safety orange clothing. New York was the nation^s first state to require hunter safety courses. The value of safety orange is evident in that 25% of the accidents resulted from the victim^s neglecting wearing it. The next largest victim group was self-inflicted wounds from careless handling. We can all learn an easy lesson from these statistics.
