To start 2001, the NYPD has issued a memo directing members of its Auxillary Police to distribute and post literature and seek information on illegal gun sales. A $500 reward is offered for anynomous tips leading to confiscation and/or arrest of "illegal guns and owners". NYC gun laws are among the strictest in the nation. Under the auspices of this new memo police are encouraged to enter and search any residence or place of business based solely upon information from an anonymous source. Residents and owners face forfiture of property and chattles and denied opportunity to confront their accuser. The dangers inherent in having constitutional guarantees abrogated by PD memo are obvious. We can look forward to anti-gun Congressional members like Schuman and H. Clinton citing the success of this program as justification for further incursions. To date no stories involving this new assault on gun rights have made the major media outlets. A photocopy and a printer-friendly version of the memo can be viewed at the RKBA Website under articles.
