From the American Firearms Industry web site

Tuesday November 25, 2003

Small arms design was perfected in the late 1890s. For the most part, many of the firearms being produced today are very much like the guns made a hundred years ago. Small arms do not wear out very quickly. Many 1901 guns operate just as well today, as the day they were manufactured.

Most small arms are good for 2,000 to 5,000 rounds of ammunition. Depending on their care, many are good for much larger numbers.

Although nobody knows for sure, the number of useable small arms in the United States, it is probably around the two hundred million mark, and collectively would have a current market value of about $45 billion.

Interestingly, the number of firearms per capita today, is LOWER than it was in 1790. Americans have always had a large number of firearms and is one of the few countries in the world since 1790, to NOT suffer under dictatorships.
