Ready on the right! Ready on the left! Lock and load! One of the most up-to-date outdoor shooting ranges in the country will soon be open to the public in northern Indiana. The Kingsbury Fish and Wildlife Area^s newly re-furnished shooting range will open at 9 a.m. on June 16. Eye and ear protection will be required of all participants and observers, said Gary Doxtater, director of DNR^s Division of Fish and Wildlife. "Range and shooter safety is of paramount importance to us. A range officer will monitor the range at all times," Doxtater said. "It is a facility that not only stresses safety and but is very family-friendly." The range, which is totally baffled, has 37 shooting positions: 10 positions at 50 yards 5 positions at 100 yards 18 positions at 10, 15 or 25 yards, and 4 shotgun stations A concessionaire will be located on site and will sell targets, ammunition, eye and ear protection and refreshments. Indoor, handicapped accessible restrooms are also available. The range may be reached on any day it is open at 219/393-1128. It will be open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Fees for the range are $4 a day for persons age 18 and up, $2 a day for persons under 18, $10 a day for a family (2 adults and 2 children), or $80 for an adult annual pass. (Persons under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) The 6,000-acre Kingsbury Fish & Wildlife Area also provides outdoor enthusiasts a great place to hunt, fish, camp and view wildlife. It is located at 5344 S. Hupp Road, near LaPorte.
