IMO the minimal weapon for self defense is something like a S&W j-frame in .38spl. For me, I would make my minimum carry piece a six shot revolver in .38 Spl, with at least one speed loader.
But in reality, the least effective gun I actually carry is a Glock 19 with one extra mag. The smallest gun I carry is my Glock 27. And honestly, I doubt I would care to use a shotgun in my house for home defense anyway. At indoor distances you will be shooting a big bullet, not a pattern. You will be deafened and partially blinded by the blast indoors. It is very diffult to maneuver a long gun in a house unless you are well trained. A long gun is easily snatched indoors. A long gun can be used as a lever or a club against you. I could go on, but I'll say this instead: if my opponent had a double long gun and I had pistol, and we were indoors, my opponent would be at a great disadvantage. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: i dont know if there will be 1, or 20, once never does. just statistically speaking, 2 shots are the average fired in self defense scenarios. i know thats an average, but the possibility of the hordes of hell are slim, so that shouldnt be a reason in and of itsself. Magazine capacity has always been a problem area for me. Where do you draw the line? If we went strictly by statistics we wouldn't bother with a gun at all because the stats are strong evidence that we will probably never need one. Yet we decide that regardless of the odds the consequences of not being adequately prepared are too horrific to risk. So now we are at "adequately prepared". My choice is to go with the two-shot average that you mentioned and then at least double it, just in case, because of the horrific consequences factor. We can spit out what-if scenarios until the cows come home and come up with situations where no gun is enough to save us. We all have to pick a compromise point somewhere between a single-shot H&R Topper and a belt fed semi auto shotgun on wheels - and then we have to live (hopefully) with our choice. |
