Since Colt introduced aluminum 2/3s of a century ago, other importers/makers like Springfield have benefitted from that experience.
I've only owned one lightweight 1911, and I sold it decades ago. I replaced it with the same exact brand and model but the steel frame version. My lightweight--a Springfield from the early 90s--didn't have a fully ramped barrel. At that time, all Springfield 1911s were built in Brazil by Imbel. Don't know if that is relevant. Also, for what it's worth, I don't recall the Lightweight having excessive recoil, nor is my current steel version too heavy.
