Hodgdon Powder www.hodgdon.com SAFETY BULLETIN SMOKELESS POWDERS IN MUZZLELOADING RIFLES Since the dawn of firearms history, firearms designers and makers have built muzzleloading firearms with one goal in mind - to safely propel a projectile with a charge of blackpowder. In the last quarter of the 19th century, a new powder was developed. It was called smokeless powder because it produced a great deal less smoke than blackpowder. It was soon discovered that smokeless powder tended to cause muzzleloading firearms to explode, injuring the shooter or damaging the firearm. In the 1970^s Hodgdon Powder Company introduced Pyrodex®, the original blackpowder substitute. Pyrodex duplicates the performance of blackpowder while being safer to handle and store. Pyrodex is NOT smokeless powder. It does not contain nitrocellulose or nitroglycerin. Pyrodex is safe in all modern muzzleloading firearms. Hodgdon Powder Company is fully aware that there are now muzzleloading firearms on the market which use some limited types of smokeless powder. While these firearms may be of the highest quality, Hodgdon Powder Company stands by the warning that appears on every can of smokeless powder we sell: "Never substitute this powder (any smokeless powder) for blackpowder or Pyrodex. Failure to follow this warning may result in SEVERE PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH to user and/or bystanders." Hodgdon Powder Company implores you, DO NOT USE ANY SMOKELESS POWDER IN ANY MUZZLELOADING FIREARM.
