I like 6.5mm cartridges--but I "discovered" the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser cartridge over 40 years ago, and realized what a great cartridge it is. The Swedes used it for their version of NRA-type target shooting, and they hunt with it up to MOOSE. Still do! It's very versatile. It even saw its share of combat, as the Swedes supplied a LOT of Swedish Mausers to the Finns for use against the Soviets during the Winter War. And the recoil is mild. I've got three Swedish Mausers in that chambering--a 29" barreled m96 long rifle, a 24" barreled m38 carbine, and a 17.7" barreled, full-stocked m94 carbine (some sources call it 18" but it's not).
Although I have been mostly focused on the Swedes, I have a 6.5x50R Japanese Arisaka rifle (fun to shoot, but less powerful than the Swedes), and have long wanted to add an Italian 6.5 Carcano. There are a couple other interesting 6.5s. In my mind, these older 6.5s are far more interesting than anything Hornady cranks out. Heck, if forced to go commercial, I'd look for a nice 6.5 Remington Magnum from the 1960s (although Remington reintroduced it in 2004 for the Remington Model 673). There is nothing that anyone is really doing today that truly needs doing. The Golden Years of cartridge development are not the 2020s. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Then too, the cynic in me tends to think that these ammo companies cranking out all these new cartridges are simply in it for the sales revenue. That’s all it is. Finding something new and shiny to sell to people. |
