I've only fired one shotgun equipped with a red dot sight and it was at paper turkey targets at a writers' meeting. It was sighted in perfectly for the set up shooting distance and was easy to use.
That experience made me think it would also be good for hunting deer or hogs with slugs or buckshot in cover heavy enough to keep most shots fairly close. I'm not sure how well it would work for fast flying targets in clay target shooting and upland bird hunting. I think it would depend upon how much the metal frame around the red dot interfered with your ability to ignore the frame while maintaining a successful alignment between the dot and target. It might just boil down to a training issue and work just fine. I went right from shooting BB guns to hunting upland birds and rabbits with a shotgun so I have a lot of time invested in using a bead and rib. And, unlike with handguns, I can still see and use that sighting system as well as ever, so I have no impetus to even look for anything better. Once I use the bead and rib to confirm my head is in the right place on the stock I try to ignore the bead and look only at the target. What's left of my brain keeps track of the bead and lines everything up. The more I try to manage both the bead and target and consciously set up the proper lead the more I miss. I think the red dot sight might just amount to an accuracy-destroying distraction for me for this kind of shooting. |
