Jerry, I find the standard A2 stock to simply be too long for me...I feel like I'm holding an M1917 or something with an A2 stock on an AR. The A1 stock is less than 1" shorter than the A2 stock, but fits me perfectly. However, once I put on a jacket and my (very stylish.. 1. It is not solid..i.e., it 'rattles' and has a slight side-to-side movement. 2. The "cheek weld" is great, but is on the moveable part of the stock...also, at the front of the cheek weld is a ridge, that my Anglo-Saxon cheek bones always seemed to find when I was shooting quickly with movement. That got a bit painful. (Yeh, I'm a wimp... What I like about the Magpul:- 1. It's solid with no fore-and-aft or side-to-side movement when locked. 2. The 'cheek weld' portion of the stock is fixed to the receiver...it doesn't move when the stock is adjusted for length. MUCH better idea than VLTOR's. OTOH, the VLTOR stock is significantly lighter than the MagPul. I opted for a FF front handguard for 2 reasons... 1. I might be using my rifle for Service Rifle competition, in which case I will be using a "real" sling...this will minimize any 'barrel bending'. 2. It makes me look very cool and people think I know a lotta stuff about AR's. I love my EOTech as well...personally, I find it sits just a tad too low for me on the upper...as I mentioned, a LaRue Tactical QD mount and riser is in my future. (If I can find a US company that will ship to us Terrorist-infested Canadians. BTW, the vertical fore grip just snaps into the rails, and comes off with two buttons, so no biggie. Not if your rails are non-milspec it don't... Mike |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I am not a big telescoping stock fan, but I was being different with this rifle, same with the vertical fore grip. You'll have to handle it before you decide: it is very light and quick! I guess there might be something to it after all. For the sights, I LOVE the EOTech holographic laser sight mated to the iron system. Unlike most guys, I did not go with the free floated forend and modified gas block. Free floating a carbine seems silly to me. I like the idea of only having to deploy one lever if the batteries fail, so only my rear sight folds down. Besides, the EOTech reticle sits right on top of my front sight, and is the perfect combat sight IMO as I keep both eyes open. Cheek weld is not critical - wherever that floating reticle is, the bullet goes! Everything remains in focus. BTW, the vertical fore grip just snaps into the rails, and comes off with two buttons, so no biggie. I like my rail covers on the forend, because they are firm rubber and fully cover the unused rails. They snap off in sections for accessory attachment. |
