The "not a .223" AR15 cartridge field is actually becoming crowded, with the .25-45 Sharps (unfortunate name, I think), the .300 Black-out, .30 AR, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 6.8x45UCC, 7.62x40 Wilson, and probably more I don't know of. While some are designed for "combat" and some for hunting, there seems to be considerable overlap.
In truth I think the big push is to be able to use the AR15 without major overhaul. It has always been available to get what seems to me a better AR15 for hunting in .243, /260 Remington, 7mm-08, etc., but only in the most recent past have "AR10" size rifles gotten light enough and inexpensive enough to compete with AR15s to make them serious contenders, it seems. Still, once one gets past the need for a new barrel, and, more importantly, the shortage of ammunition, I'm not sure I see the draw to these .223-based cartridges. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: (Moved to Cartridges and Ammo section for continuity--Mark) It is interesting what will pop up as folks try to make the AR better as a hunting rifle. They say that this round comes pretty close to the old .250-3000 Savage, which was a pretty good deer and varmint combination and also a pretty good chambering for new or recoil sensitive hunters. |
