It looks good. I'm not even sure where I would find UNboiled Linseed Oil. Pretty much every reference I have seen of it is to the Boiled kind. The stock actually looks pretty nice. At current bid of 755 with 5 days to go, I'd expect that price to simply double. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: What are your thoughts on this CMP M1 rifle? It's pretty, but the seller said it was sanded and refinished with Linseed Oil by a local woodworker. A stock should not be finished with linseed oil, but with boiled linseed oil. Maybe it was, and the seller either doesn't know the difference or was just using shorthand, but I'd have to know before considering it. Secondly, I see at least one spot where it could be a sanding error, and "local woodworker" doesn't mean expert with rifle stocks. Buying something like this from afar seems risky based on that alone. Finally, CMP stock or no CMP stock, I've never seen an original high grade walnut stock on an issue military M1 rifle, so the milsurp guy in me is fighting the admirer-of-handsome-rifles guy in me. I wouldn't even consider this, but it is extremely inexpensive right now. Odds are I won't have to make a decision because it will no doubt go for enough money to pay for Biden's aid to Ukraine and then some--because there are enough beginners out there with no knowledge to ask the above questions. And others who don't care. But I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts. |
