I can't get over being a collector with that attitude when it comes to collectibles, and that's how I look at the M17 today.. In answer to shooting it, I'd say run a magazine or 2 through it just for the experience/pleasure/knowledge if you really want to do so (the gungeek/student of firearms "itch"). Me, personally, I'd keep from shooting it, but that's just my preference when it comes to NIB collectibles.

And I would never carry it -- just put it into the safe and let it reside there. Carrying it might do some finish damage and reduce its collectibility.

OTOH, if you do not consider it a collectible, use it like any other pistol you've purchased. 

I suspect when all the noise about the P320/M17/M18 quiets down, with or without the discovery of a design flaw, these pistols (M17/M18) will still have appeal to Sig Sauer firearms collectors in the future. Even "mistakes" like the Colt AA2000 or Double Eagle end up in Colt collector inventories.

The M17 does have a safety, which I would always use, and I would always diligently practice safe gun handling.

It always puzzled me why Sig didn't offer a manual safety on their P320 line, other than 1 specific carry model. I guess it took a military contract specification to make the manual safety more available on the P320 line?
