I'll probably die frustrated with our military. | ||||||

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: But if the cartridge change for an AR15 is as truly simple as these civilian companies would have consumers believe, it would seem a true no-brainer for the military to acquire a more lethal cartridge for our boys and girls in camo, eh? The M4/M16 is a modular weapon, so I see no problem financially in changing out the barrel or even the upper. It would be less expensive than a complete new rifle, and would require less, if any, retraining for the troops. But simplicity (and economy) is something that our government/military has a hard time getting its arms around. Lord knows how much has been spent on upgrading and improving the ammunition for the M16/M4, and the Marines and SOC, IIRC, were using the Mk318 round while the Army was using the M855A1 and some 77gr Mk262s. (That may still be true. Spec Ops (and maybe the Marines) field tested the 6.8 mm, and that went nowhere because of resistance from higher up. That ended up with the development of the Mk318, a 5.56mm round. The whole thing is mind numbing to me! Harvey |
