For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Hathcock used a heavy barrel M70 with an 8X Unertl scope and match ammunition. Those rifles were what a number of Marine Rifle teams used in competition. Here's a photo of another Marine sniper in Vietnam with an M70.  When Remington made the M700 rifle available with a heavy barrel like the Winchester, the Marines opted for those rifles.
