Hathcock used a heavy barrel M70 with an 8X Unertl scope and match ammunition. Those rifles were what a number of Marine Rifle teams used in competition. Here's a photo of another Marine sniper in Vietnam with an M70.
![]() When Remington made the M700 rifle available with a heavy barrel like the Winchester, the Marines opted for those rifles.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: True, but they actually started with the Model 70 when ramping up a sniper program in Vietnam--it's the book by Carlos Hathcock if memory serves. Your memory is correct. Hathcock used a heavy barrel M70 with an 8X Unertl scope and match ammunition. Those rifles were what a number of Marine Rifle teams used in competition. He also used an M2 Machine Gun on one occasion and a 105mm M40 recoilless rifle on another occasion. IIRC, other Marine snipers used M14s, M1Ds and they later used Remington M700s with Redfield 3X9 scopes. Harvey |
