FWIW, I had a Springfield Armory (commercial) Garand in .308, and the reliability was terrible.  I sent it back for service.  After it came back it was better, but certainly not perfect.

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: I think it's a good idea. Surplus eventually dries up and I've often wondered how much longer the CMP can keep up providing surplus rifles. Based on availability, I'd say not much longer.  Also, the new rifles, while expensive are in the same neighborhood as top tier M1A rifles. I'm tempted to get one chambered in .308.
