Without having fired my new G23 yet, but having fired my other four Glocks extensively, the major advantage that a G23 has (for me) over the XD-40 is the sights. The broad sights of the Glocks are the best I've found for the particular visual deficits I have. That advantage may disappear once I've installed the MMC sights on the XD; however, they still haven't arrived yet. Another advantage is concealability. The Glock 19/23 pistols are somewhat more concealable than the XD-40 Service model. A very minor advantage of the G23 over the XD40 would be the extra round capacity. I will, as I always do, five a range report on the new G23 as soon as I've done it. Since my other Glocks, both 9mm and .45 ACP, are quite accurate pistols, I have no reason to believe that the G23 won't be as well. Assuming that to be the case, I would probably prefer the G23 for regular carry use. I might still carry the XD-40 frequently in the winter when more concealing clothing is worn. If I were back in my LEO days wearing a weapon in a duty rig, I might prefer the XD-40. In fact, assuming that the MMC sights do the trick, I might have preferred the 5" Tactical model for that purpose. However, I don't wear duty rigs any more. All of my pistol wearing is concealed, and I do that constantly -- the only time I'm not armed is when I'm going into the hospital for an appointment, or to a doctor's office when I know I'll be removing my pants! So concealability is a big factor in the carry equation for me. Not the only factor, else I'd carry my G26, P232, or Tomcat all the time. |

For reference, the above message is a reply to a message where: Did I say that I would never buy another .40 pistol? No, you did not. What I recall you said was that you had always wanted a G23 and that if you had bought one (before you acquired the XD-40), it probably would have been your favorite carry gun. However, when you bought the XD-40, your satisfaction with it seemed to indicate that the urge to get a G23 had been abated, especially since your satisfaction with the grip of the XD-40 now exceeded your prior favorite grip, your H&K pistol. And you specifically compared the XD-40 to the G23, indicating that the XD-40 was, for the most part, a better .40 caliber gun for you when it came to recoil and the "sprooong" trigger feel of Glocks. But being the ardent collector that you are, I guess the need to fill that .40 caliber gap in your Glock collection kept calling. When you get a chance to sufficiently fire your G23 and, perhaps, rethink your comparison with the XD-40, please let us know your thoughts. At this point, I am personally inclined to go with the Glock, but both the G23 and the XD-40 are readily available locally for about $450 or less. I won't have the chance to extensively test-fire both before I purchase one, so your insight will be helpful. I realize that I should not transpose your preferences to myself, but at least being able to handle both guns locally gives me enough experience to make up my mind. Or I can just buy them both. Thanks, Bob. -Sam
