Mark is right in his response. The lock-up of the Rem 700 and Win 70 and Mauser are all about the same. The only way there could be an advantage is if some Gunsmith did a better job blue printing an action. I think the primary reasons the Rem 700 had such good accuracy is the action cross section is round making it easier to inlet and Remington used good barrels.

The Rem 700 has several problems with its design. Until recently most all high level, custom built, hunting rifles used the Pre-64 Mod 70 or Mauser action.

Things are changing today as there are many custom-built actions built on the Rem 700 footprint. The new actions are the choice of the Precision Shooting Shooters. The new actions have eliminated the shallow action-bolt depth problem and the poor design of the Rem 700 extractor.

Rem 700 Features/Problems

1. The Rem 700 action is a round tube that is not very thick and doesn't offer a lot of threads for the action bolts to screw into.

2. The action is push-feed and not as desirable for a big game hunting rifle. Not a problem for target shooting or at long distance steel.

3. The extractor is a small bent piece of steel and doesn't get a good purchase on the rim of a shell.

4. The ejector is a spring-loaded plunger and doesn't work if the spring breaks.

5. The action doesn't have an integral recoil lug. It uses a recoil lug that sits between the barrel and the face of the action. It works and is cheap, but I always preferred a recoil-lug that was part of the action.

6. The safety works on the trigger and is not nearly as good as the three-position safety on the Model 70 for hunting.

7. The Rem 700 does have a good trigger.

8. The Barrels used in the Rem 700 are very good. They are primarily why the Rem 700 are accurate.

9. The round action is easier to inlet and may have a lot to do with its good accuracy.
